So today we're going to learn indirect questions.
In many situations, we use "indirect questions" more than "direct questions."
Can anyone tell me WHY we often use indirect questoins more?
Where is the bank? It's a little rude
Could you tell where the bank is?
Do you know where the rest rooms are?
The last word is the verb "to be" ...
"is" and "are"
This next group is a bit more difficult..
How often do the buses leave?
Can you tell me how often the buses leave?
The only way to get good at making indirect questions is to practice.
How much does a newspaper cost?
Is this a "to be" question or a "do does" question?
Do you know how much a newspaper costs?
Can you tell me how much a newspaper costs?
Let's try number 2: Where is the nearest cash machine?
Number 3 ... What time do the banks open?
Do you know what time the banks open?
Could you tell me when the banks open?
Could you tell me what time the banks open?
"what time" or "when" here are both ok..
Number 4... How often do the buses come?
Could you tell me how often the buses come?
Could you tell me how often the bus comes?
See the difference???
The first one is plural, the second one is singular.
Small difference, but an important difference!
Actually in real life, you could probably say either sentence.
It doesn't matter which one you say.
If you go to a bus stop, and ask either one, the meaning is the same.
无论 which one you pick, the grammar must be correct!
Number 5... Where can you get a good meal?
But you can also use 'you'
Sometimes in English "you" means ... "anyone"
Do you know where you can get a good meal?
Generally though, just say "I" is good too.
Do you know where I can get a good meal?
Can you tell me where I can get a good meal?
How late do the nightclubs stay open?
Number 6
Do you know how late the nightclubs stay open?
night clubs
You're visiting New York City.
Think of one question you might ask someone in New York City ...
And make an indirect question with it.
Do you know where the subway station is?
Could you tell me what hotel is closest to the airport?
So let's look at the words in Section B
buses
newstand
hotel
taxis
So it's first, first, second, first.
Next group:
improve
provide
public
machine
What's the number for each one?
Second group?
two, two, one, two ...
the opposite of the first group
So on Monday we're going to do the progress check for Lesson 1 and Lesson 2
So your homework is to review Lesson 1 and Lesson 2
That's the homework...
HOWEVER
If you want an extra challenge, you can do the reading at the end of Lesson 2
It's a little difficult
But it's not THAT hard ....
And it will help you.
Maybe try to read it with a partner?
You can help each other understand difficult words or sentences. That would be very helpful.
Have a good weekend then!
I hope to see everyone on Monday
Don't give up, don't get lazy
But not so so so difficult...
Just a little
