I was at the airport, seeing a friend off yesterday.I heard a worried mother ask the airport staff: “When will my son’s flight arrive?” They told her: “It will arrive after an hour.” we can understand this but a native speaker would not have said it like that. A native speaker would have said: “it will arrive in an hour”. I know that this may be very confusing because in Chinese people say “一个小时后”. So why do we say “in an hour” not "after an hour"? The key is because we mean “an hour from now” “一个小时后”是相对于“现在”.
