曰：“如斯而已乎？”曰：“修己以安百姓。修己以安百姓，尧、舜其犹病诸！”
Yuan Zang was squatting on his heels, and so waited the approach of the Master, who said to him, "In youth not humble as befits a junior; in manhood, doing nothing worthy of being handed down,
原壤夷俟，子曰：“幼而不孙弟，长而无述焉，
and living on to old age: this is to be a pest." With this he hit him on the shank with his staff. A youth of the village of Ch'ueh was employed by Confucius to carry the messages between him and his visitors, someone asked about him, saying,
老而不死，是为贼！”以杖叩其胫。阙党童子将命，或问之曰：
"I suppose he has made great progress." The Master said, "I observe that he is fond of occupying the seat of a full-grown man,
“益者与？”子曰：“吾见其居于位也，
I observe that he walks shoulder to shoulder with his elders. He is not one who is seeking to make progress in learning, he wishes quickly to become a man."
见其与先生并行也。非求益者也，欲速成者也。”
