Young people increasingly see the use of full stops in online communication as abrupt, angry or passive aggressive, especially in shorter messages, according to linguists.
Debate around whether the use of the full stop in online communications is seen as aggressive dates to at least 2013, when an article in New York magazine explained that “a period in a text carries more weight than a period in an e-mail”.
