Last-ditch effort
Welcome to English in a Minute!!
When you listen to American English, you might hear this: Last-ditch effort.
Let’s find out what it means. Listen.
-Woman: Did you watch that basketball game last
night?
-Man: Yeah. That shot at the end of the game was a
real last-ditch effort to try and win. But it’s hard to make the
basket from that far away!
-Woman: Too bad he didn’t make it. He could’ve
won the game for the team.
Alast ditch effort is a final attempt to succeed at
something. It’s a difficult thing to do. It may or may
not work. In our example, the basketball player’s last-ditch effort to make a basket did not work, and his
team lost the game. (Boo~~~)
And that’s English in a Minute!
