Going Out the Passes: First Series
VIII
The Khan has plundered[1] one of our forts,
the dust of war darkens a hundred miles.
Manly swords swing just a few times,
and their army flees before us.
We go back, their best-known chiefs our prisoners,
bound necks are presented to the commander’s gate.
And I hide, only one of the company—
one victory alone just doesn’t matter.
