暮光之城—The meaning of being young

When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were things like astronaut, president. Or in my case, a princess. When we were ten, they asked again. We answered, rock star, cowboy, or in my case, a gold medalist. But now that we've grown up, they want a serious answer. Well, how about this? Who the hell knows? This isn't the time to make hard and fast decisions, this is the time to make mistakes. Take the wrong train and get stuck somewhere. Fall in love, a lot. Major in philosophy, because there's no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind, and change it again, because nothing is permanent. So, make as many mistakes as you can. That way, someday, when they ask what we wanna be. We won't have to guess. We'll know. 【参考译文】 当我们五岁的时候，他们问我们长大之后想做什么。我们的回答就是宇航员、总统，诸如此类。或是像我这样的回答，想当公主。当我们十岁的时候，他们又问。而我们会回答说，摇滚明星、牛仔，或是像我这样的回答，想当金牌得主。可是现在我们已经长大，他们希望得到一个严肃的回答。要不，这样回答吧？ 谁知道呢？现在并不是一个做出艰难抉择或者是草率决定的时候，而是一个去试错的时候。比如坐错了火车或者是被困在某个地方。不停地谈恋爱。主修哲学吧，因为以后你肯定会找不到工作。你可以不停地改变自己的想法，因为没有什么是永久不变的。所以，你要尽可能地多犯错。这样一来，有一天，他们再次问起我们想做什么。我们不必再去猜。答案已在心中。
