When Leaves Leave
A leaf decided one fine day to sail off in the air.
It left upon a cool fall breeze for only who-knows-where.
It had a grasshopper at the prow, and two twigs were its oars.
The stem served as its rudder, and its seats were birch-bark boards.
It left one day in autumn and was gone without a trace.
Nothing but an empty branch was left there in its place.
The leaves may all fall off before the frozen winter's gloom.
But in the spring, they will return and come out in full bloom.
