A: Hey, How are you?
B: Hey, I am doing great. Actually, I just had a great job interview the other day. I really hope they hire me.
A: Oh, have you heard back from them?
B: No, not yet. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully they'll call me today.
In American English, keeping your fingers crossed means that you are hoping for the best possible outcome.
5.bite my tougue: 忍住不说,not gonna talk about something.
You better bite your tongue and not say a word of this to anyone! 你最好保持缄默,而且对任何人一个字也不要说!
Bite back (something)/ bite (something) back
想说又不能说,话到了嘴边只能咽回去。英文里bite有“咬”的意思,bite back“咬回去”,这个短语形容“欲言又止”是否很生动呢?
例:I attempted to smile sweetly while biting back angry comments.
我尽量挤出一丝讨喜的微笑,把一肚子气话都咽了下去。
