The main function of the mouth is twofold: eating and speaking. So some phrase and idioms formed from the word are to do with these two functions. Here are two examples:
“This cake melts in the mouth. ”
“Shut your mouth!”
But, the following expressions are totally unrelated to either eating or speaking:
“ He is down in the mouth. ”(He is in la spirits. )
“This horse is light in the mouth. ”(This horse is easy to manage.)
