collar 衣领 A collar is the part of a shirt or coat that fits around the neck. A dog collar is another thing：it is a leather band put round the neck of a dog. What workers are “white-collar workers”？They are such workers as teachers ，office workers and civil servants. Their duties allow them to wear white shirts. In contrast, workers such as miners ，mechanics and construction workers usually wear blue work clothes. So they are called blue -collar workers. It is easy to guess that “in collar”and “out of collar” are opposite to each other in meaning. “The man was in collar.” That is to say, he had a job. “The man is out of collar now .” That means he is out of work now. 领子是衬衫和外衣围脖子的部分，a dog collar（狗项圈）是另一回事儿了，它是套在狗颈上的皮带。 白领工人是怎样的工人呢？他们是像教师、办公室工作人员，公务员之类的工作者，他们的职务可允许他们穿上白衬衣，反之像矿工，机械工，建筑工之类的工人则通常穿蓝色工作服，因此他们被称为蓝领工人。 不难猜出，in collar和out of collar的意思是相反的，the man was in collar，那就是说他过去有事做，the man is out of collar now，意思是说他现在没有工作。
