String is much used in our daily life. We often tie things with string or hang things on string. When you hear people say “first string ”or “pull strings”, you may wonder what they are. The former can refer to the best group of players on a team，that is ，the first team or“A”team. The latter means “secretly exert influence”.
You know a baseball team or a football team consists of a certain number of players. Only very good players are put on the first string. The others are second- string. It occasionally happens that a second-string player, in order to be put on the first string, pulls some strings with the coach.This is certainly a disgraceful act.
One more point：if so-and-so it's just below the head of a department， you can say he plays second string in the department.
小绳子在日常生活中大量使用，我们经常用绳子绑东西或把物品吊在绳子上。当你听人家说，first string or pull string的时候，你可能感到奇怪，那是什么？前者可能只运动队中的一群优秀队员，也就是主力队或甲级队，后者的意思是暗地里施加影响。
你知道棒球队或足球队都是由一定数量的队员组成的，只有最优秀的队员才被编进主力队中，其他人就作为后备队员了。偶尔也有这样的情况，一名后备队员为了进入主力队，暗中对教练施加影响，这当然是一种不光彩的行为。
还有一点：如果某某人仅仅位于一个部门的主管人之下，你就可以说他在这个部门里担任副手。
