背景解读
沃尔特·惠特曼（Walt Whitman，1819-1892），美国诗人、散文家，被称为自由诗（free verse）之父。他是城市的诗人，民主的诗人，生命的诗人。他的诗集《草叶集》（Leaves of Grass）刚出版时因为对性的描述而被很多人难以接受。
这首诗是惠特曼生前最负盛名的诗歌之一，与他其他的诗歌相比韵脚和格律都更为规整。诗人甚至几乎后悔写了这样一首有名的诗歌（ “Damn My Captain...I’m almost sorry I ever wrote the poem”）。电影《死亡诗社》中，这首诗被引用的场景也很经典。
此诗作于1865年林肯总统被刺之后，是对林肯的悼词。诗歌中处处是强烈的对比：鲜艳的彩带和惨白的双唇，欢呼的人群和静寂的甲板，胜利的船和险恶的旅途，奖赏和死亡诗中的“船长”指的便是林肯，这艘船就是美国，废奴运动和美国内战则是艰苦的航程。这种比喻手法叫做扩喻（extended metaphor），也就是在平行的句子里运用同一个比喻。在这里，整首诗都是一个比喻，连诗行的形状也像一艘船。
