English version: Morning guys! Today will be kind of nightmare for some of the college students, coz it’s the day for CET4 and CET6. So I make this special English edition to memorize this special day. But as it is a Cantonese teaching program, I will speak in standard Cantonese English in 3, 2, 1!
As we know, Guangdong has a long history of communicating with foreign countries and part of it, such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong were the colonies of Uk. So Cantonese is deeply influenced by English, and many words come from English. Today I am going to introduce some of the words used in “clothing, eating, living and moving”.
These two weeks many seniors are taking graduation photos. And they need to wear a tie, which is call “呔” in Cantonese. And there is something similar, and that is bowtie, which is called “煲呔”in Cantonese. The former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, 曾荫权, loves wearing bowtie so much that he got a nickname called “煲呔曾”. But as a Diaosi, my favorite outfit is T-shirt, which is called “T恤” in Cantonese.
Talking about eating in this hot weather, I think ice-cream is the best for the weather. Although there are all sorts of ice-cream in the store, the most popular ones are still these 3 regular favors: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, which are called “云呢拿”, “朱古力”, “士多啤梨” in Cantonese.
After “eating” let’s talk about “living”. If you live in the city, I bet you live in an apartment, and there must be a lift in your building. And “lift” is called “猎” in Cantonese. Inside your apartment, a “梳发”, sofa is the necessity in your living room. Near your apartment, there must be a “士多”, “store” that you can buy almost everything you need. Taking about “士多”, it’s a common memory for kids born in 1980s and 1990s in Guangzhou. We used to buy a bottle of soda, and sit on the stools “吹水” with little friends for whole day long. But it’s a pity that there are less and less stores because of the fierce competition with supermarkets in the city.
The last thing I want to introduce is “moving”. The most popular vehicle to move around among students must be the bus, and it’s called “巴士” in Cantonese. Whatever vehicle you take, there is a motor, “摩达” in it. When your car broke down on the road, you need a spare tire , “士啤胎” to replace the worn out one.
All right, this is pretty much of today’s program. But before it ends, I need to warn you that the program is only for entertainment, please do not use it as a CET listening material, or you will regret after the exam. Finally I want to introduce “士多啤梨苹果橙” from Twins, let’s review the word “士多啤梨” with this song.
