Yang Lan: In the year of 1973, the US government set up its Liaison Office in Beijing. Why did you choose to go to China, basically a land unknown, when offered much more comfortable and familiar positions in the UK and France? George Bush: Well, I was offered that by President Ford, but I just had a feeling… I didn’t know that much about China, but I had the feeling China was the future. I mean, a huge country...“How so? It was so enclosed at that time.” I know it was enclosed but I just felt that things would change. That’d be wonderful to get to know as best I could. I couldn’t get to do it very well, cuz I was kept… pretty confined when I was the Chief of the Liaison Office. But… I was right. I bet on the future. I bet that China was gonna emerge, strong. I never predict it to be as powerful and as significant a member in the international community as it is. But I think I was right.
