1. There are times when the destiny of the world depends on one man. In China’s Western Regions in the year 90 CE, that man is Ban Chao. As they face the might of the Kushan army, Ban Chao and his men are outnumbered, but they are prepared to sacrifice everything. China’s future rests on their fate and their actions.
2. On the edge of the Takalamakan, the least hospitable desert in the world, stands the oasis of Dunhuang. Today, it’s a haven for tourists who come to find refuge in the shade of Singing Sands Mountain and the waters of Crescent Lake. But in ancient times, in the time of Ban Chao, Dunhuang was not only a refuge. This was the edge of the world.
3. Dunhuang county was founded in 111 BCE by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. As the most westerly of the four counties of the Hexi Region, the garrison was established to protect the western frontier. Guards are on constant watch. In case of attack, warning fires are lit. These fires give Dunhuang its name, Shining Beacon.
