Chinese icebreaker① Xuelong has broken free from pack ice in Antarctic②.
The vessel③ has been trapped in ice floes since moving in to help rescue over 50 people stranded④ on a Russian ship last week.
Xuelong managed to break ice for about 100 meters on Tuesday morning, but later became trapped in the broken floes.
The successful escape came after a change in wind direction loosened the dense ice floes surrounding⑤ the vessel.
"Report to Director Liu, icebreaker Xuelong made a successful escape from thick sea ice at 17:50 Beijing time after 13 hours of efforts. It's moving forward in water areas. All the crew members and facilities⑥ are in normal condition."
101 people boarded the research vessel which is on China's 30th scientific expedition⑦ to Antarctica.
Currently, Xuelong is on an open water voyage⑧ in the Southern Ocean.
Meanwhile, the stranded Russian ship has also managed to break free after being trapped in ice since Christmas.
Xuelong's helicopter lifted all 52 passengers from the stranded ship to an Australian vessel last Thursday.
A U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker is currently on its way to assist the Chinese and Russian ships.
It left Sydney on Sunday responding to a request for help, and is expected to reach the area within a week.
