At the time Gutenberg introduced the press, there was a substantial information industry in Europe. It was probably Europe's biggest employer. It consisted of hundreds of monasteries, many of which housed large numbers of highly skilled monks. Each monk labored from dawn to dusk, six days a week, copying books by hand. An industrious, well-trained monk could do four pages a day, or twenty-five pages during a six-day week, for an annual output of twelve hundred to thirteen hundred handwritten pages.
