A 6-year-old boy was returning from the beach with his 4-year-old sister. Suddenly, the boy found that his sister was lagging behind. He stopped and looked back. His sister was standing in front of a toy shop. She was looking at something with great interest. The boy went back to her and asked, ‘do you want something?’ The sister pointed at a teddy bear. The boy held her hand and led her into the shop. To the little girl’s delight, he handed her the teddy.
The shopkeeper had been observing the two with great amusement. The boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, ‘how much for this teddy, Sir?’ The elderly shopkeeper asked the boy with a lot of love and affection, ‘Well, what can you pay?’ From his basket, the boy took out some shells he had collected from the beach. He gave them to the old man. The shopkeeper started counting them as if he were counting real money. Then he looked at the boy. The boy asked him worriedly, ‘is it less?’ The shopkeeper said, ‘no, no… this is too much. I’ll return the extra.’ Saying so, he kept only 4 shells with him and returned the remaining. The boy, very happily kept those shells back in his basket and went home with his delighted sister.
One of the shopkeeper’s workers asked him, “sir, you gave away such an expensive toy just for 4 shells? The shopkeeper said with a smile, ‘Well, for us there are mere shells. But for that boy, these shells are very precious. At this age, he doesn’t understand what money is. But when he grows up, he’ll know. When he remembers that he purchased a toy with shells instead of money, he will think of me and believe that some good exists in this world. It will help him develop a positive attitude and he too, in turn, will feel motivated to be a good person. Whatever emotion you infuse into the world, it will further spread. If you do good, positivity will spread. If you do bad, it will only cause more negativity. Keep your circle positive. Don’t forget to share this piece of goodness with your circle.
