Football Ref Imprisoned for Match-Fixing Released
Former Chinese football referee Lu Jun has been released from prison today.
Chinanews.com is reporting Lu's wife and son picked him up early this morning. They drove away immediately after Lu got into the white Mercedes Benz SUV.
Groups of journalists had crowded outside the prison. However, none of them got the chance to interview him.
Lu was sentenced to five and a half years in prison in 2010 for taking a total of 810,000 yuan, about 129,000 us dollars in bribes for fixing seven league matches involving four clubs.
China's professional football leagues have been plagued with allegations of gambling, match-fixing and corruption for years.
In order to clean up the game, a nationwide crackdown on gambling and match-fixing was launched by the government in 2009.
The investigation lasted for nearly 3 years. Some high-level football officials and referees have been put behind bars and the involved football clubs had been punished.
Some of those imprisoned have been set free, including former soccer player Lv Dong and referee Zhou Weixin.
Once China's best-known referee, "Golden Whistle" Lu Jun had officiated in the 2002 South Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Lu served as a gardener and cleaner during his years in jail. He got a one-year sentence reduction as a result of good behavior after a public trial at the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court.
Various media sources report that Lu Jun will never again work in the sporting world.

S. Korea to support "proper" costs for DPRK delegation to Asiad
South Korea is planning to support "proper" costs for North Korea's delegation participating in the upcoming Incheon Asian Games.
A government official was quoted as saying there were no big differences between the two sides on how much to pay for the North delegation's stay, noting that South Korea will provide financial support at a proper level after considering the past inter-Korean practices.
The 17th Asian Games will be held in South Korea's western port city of Incheon from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.
North Korea will send a delegation of 273 people, including 150 athletes as well as coaches, referees and other officials.
North Korea sent a 362-member delegation to the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea in 2002. Seoul covered most of the costs for that stay.
North Korea announced its decision last week not to send its cheering squad to the Games.
