Football : South African football fans mourn death of captain Senzo Meyiwa who was shot dead by armed robbers. The captain of South Africa's national football team Senzo Meyiwa has been shot dead by armed robbers in a town near Johannesburg, while trying to protect his girlfriend. Meyiwa died on Sunday after suffering a single shot through the chest after two armed men broke into the home of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, a South African actress and singer. The 27-year-old Meyiwa was the goalkeeper for the Orlando Pirates. He captained South Africa in its last four matches in the African Nations Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal. He was last seen in action on Saturday when his club advanced to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup. Meyiwa's death puts the spotlight on issue of rampant gun violence in South Africa, which has plagued the country for several years. More than 17,000 people were murdered in South Africa between April 2013 and March 2014. This high-profile incident comes less than a week after Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius was given a five-year jail sentence for culpable homicide after shooting his girlfriend. Police are offering 14,000 US dollars to anyone with information leading to the suspects' arrest. MLB: Bumgarner takes Giants a step closer to a World Series Win Tragedy also has struck the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Top baseball prospect Oscar Taveras has been killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic. His girlfriend was killed as well. The outfielder was considered one of baseball's brightest prospects, being ranked number-three overall at the start of the season. The 22-year-old made his MLB debut in 2014, playing 80 games for the Cards. Just two weeks ago, during the National League Championship Series, Taveras hit a home run, helping his team beat the eventual NL champion San Francisco Giants. Now the latest on the World Series in Major League Baseball San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner dominated Kansas City in a complete-game 5-0 shutout in game five of the championship on Sunday. The left-hander breezed through the contest, allowing just four hits and striking out eight, to give the Giant's a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven series. This puts the Giant's just one win away from their third World Series title in five seasons. Bumgarner has pitched seven-plus innings in each of his 4 World Series starts, conceding only one run total. NHL: Sharks end dry spell beating Anaheim Ducks In NHL action After two weeks of mediocre play, the San Jose Sharks unleashed their frustration on the Anaheim Ducks, filling the net and the penalty box during an aggressive game which ended with the Sarks winning 4-1. This allowed the Sharks to end a four-game losing streak. The Chicago Blackhawks skated past the Ottawa Senators 2-1. The Los Angeles Kings beat the Colombus Blue Jackets 5-2. The Vancouver Canucks scored three goals in under two minutes in the second period before defeating the Washington Capitals, 4-2. Finally, Bryan Little's winning goal with just 25 seconds left in overtime, lifted the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Badminton: Chinese Taipei shuttler Chou Tien Chen makes history at the French Open In Badminton, Chou Tien Chen has became the first ever badminton player from Taiwan to win a men's singles title in a Badminton World Superseries event. He beat China's Wang Zhengming to win the French Open on Sunday. The 24-year-old, displayed an aggressive style, while thrashing the world number five in straight sets. In women's Badminton singles, China's Wang Shixian defended her champion's title for the second consecutive year, after the top seed, China's Li Xuerui, pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. Chinese Olympic champion Sun Yang snatched the title in his favourite event, the men's 400m freestyle, touching home in 3 minutes 37 seconds. This year's FINA Swimming world cup is being held in seven different cities. It started in August and wraps up next month. Volleyball: Iran beat China to become U-20 Asian volleyball champions Iran defeated China in 3 straight sets to win the U20 Asian Men's volleyball championship on Saturday. This was a surprise victory as Iran was considered the underdog when they took on three-time champions China in Baharain. China headed into the finals in high spirits with an unbeaten record during the tournament. But the Iranians had better team co-ordination and nailed the first set in less than 80 minutes. The Chinese team couldn't make a comeback after this initial blow. Despite losing the Asian title, the Chinese U20 Men's volleyball team will qualify for the World Under-21 Championships to be held in Mexico, next year.
