Anniversary of Nelson Mandela's death commemorated
South Africa is commemorating the one-year anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela's death.
The events are part of a larger effort to keep the memory of the anti-apartheid icon alive and promote social cohesion of the country.
The premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille has given a keynote speech at an event commemorating the passing of Neloson Mandela in Cape Town.
"We reflect our memory the life, the legacy of Nelson Mandela. He built his life on the set of values to found the way to our constitution. And those value that guide us and South Africans on the past forward.
The Chinese Consul General to Cape Town Liang Shugen also attended the party.
"President Mandela dedicated his life to anti-apartheid movements in South Africa. That's why he was so respected by South Africans. People from all races are memorizing him one year after his death."
Ahead of the anniversary event, an exhibition honouring Mandela was opened in Johannesburg.
The exhibition organized by the Nelson Mandela Foundation shows Mandela's official office in Johannesburg, where he worked and received guests from all over the world.

An official commemoration was also held at Freedom Park in Pretoria.
A series of other events will follow on different dates.
Mandela, who was South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999, died on Dec. 5, 2013.
He dedicated his life to eliminating the legacy of apartheid and promoting racial reconciliation in South Africa.
