Alibaba invests in Shanghai International Film Festival
China's e-commerce giant Alibaba has signed a strategic partnership deal with the Shanghai International Film Festival.
It's the latest step in a bid to boost its entertainment presence.
Alibaba spent over $3 billion in the entertainment industry last year, with potential acquisitions in Hollywood, but has yet to make a major move there.
Founder and executive chairman Jack Ma hopes to become a major player internationally and described Alibaba as "the biggest entertainment company in the world."
According to Ding Li, deputy general manager of the Shanghai International Film Festival, the deal aims to integrate the platform advantages of Alibaba to assist newcomers in the industries, support interactions with film enthusiasts and explore the future of the film industry.
The deal is also a sign of the growth of the film festival circuit in China, as the Shanghai Film Festival, running from June 13 to 21, competes with the growing presence of the Beijing International Film Festival, which takes place in April.

And production of the movie's fifth installment has been put on hold as everyone awaits Depp's return to Australia.

But Depp's prolonged absence has fuelled rumours he is now undergoing treatment for alcohol issues, at an "at home rehab" under the care of his sister and personal assistant.
With only 14 weeks of filming to go, the crew has been told work on 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' could recommence on April 15.
