He died overnight at a hospice in Sydney, surrounded by his wife and other family members. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has paid tribute to him. "Richie Benaud has been the voice of cricket. There would be very few Australians who have not past a summer in the company of Richie Benaud. He was the accompaniment of an Australian summer. His voice was even more present than the chirping of the cicadas in our suburbs and towns and that voice tragically is now still but we remember him with tremendous affection. He hasn't just been the voice of cricket since the early 1960s he was an extraordinarily successful Australian cricket captain. He led our country for 5 years in 28 tests and he never lost a test series." Benaud had been fighting skin cancer since late last year. Benaud led Australia to three successive Ashes series victories in the 1950s and 1960s. He played 63 tests for his country and was the first player to score 2,000 test runs and take 200 test wickets. It's reported that he will be honored with a state funeral.
