Documentary about 'Saturday Night Live' opens Tribeca Film Festival The Tribeca festival has kicked off at New York's Beacon Theatre with the premiere of the "Saturday Night Live" documentary "Live From New York!" Directed by Bao Nguyen, the film looks back at the history of "SNL" and was made with the sanction of "SNL" creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels. Michaels talks about his idea for the documentary. "('SNL' executive producer and costume designer) Tom Broeker who is just a genius and who has been at the show for a long time you know came in and said I'd like to do a documentary and I'd like to sort of mark this time and I think I have the people to do it and I said, 'Good luck and I'll see you at the premiere' and I expect to see him at the premiere tonight." Nguyen said at times the project felt like "almost an impossible time." "Live From New York!" adds to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of "Saturday Night Live," and it also starts a theme at this year's Tribeca. A number of films at the festival this year document comedy from behind-the-scenes, including films on the National Lampoon and New Yorker cartoons. A Monty Python reunion is also planned.
