Death toll soars to 6,204 in Nepal earthquake The death toll from Nepal's earthquake has risen to over 6,200. The number of injured now tops 14-thousand. Quake-hit China-Nepal highway no longer blocked The Chinese side of a key highway linking Tibet and Nepal was cleared of obstructions on Friday, six days after the powerful earthquake in Nepal caused landslides that blocked the major trade and tourist route Traffic resumed on the highway between Nyalam County and Zham Town, part of the China-Nepal highway on Thursday, allowing residents to be evacuated from the town, which was threatened by aftershocks and landslides. The China-Nepal highway is a scenic route connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu. It was built in 1965. UNICEF's humanitarian supplies reach quake-devastated Nepal The United Nations Children's Fund has said it will deliver 29 tons of humanitarian supplies, including tents, water purification tablets and first aid kits to at least 1.7 million children in quake-hit Nepal. So far, more than a dozen informal settlements have sprung up around Kathmandu. UNICEF and local partners are trucking safe water and hygiene supplies to all of them. Meanwhile, UNICEF has launched a 50-million-U.S. dollar appeal in support of its humanitarian response to the earthquake which will be rolled out over the next 90 days. Former U.S. President Clinton begins Kenya visit Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has arrived in Kenya for a three-day visit to charity projects in the African country. The trip is part of his tour of African countries which includes Tanzania, Liberia and Morocco. During the visit he will inspect development projects funded by the Clinton Foundation that seek to boost agriculture, health, education and wildlife conservation. Afghan battle kills 27 including 25 militants A total of 27 people including 25 Taliban militants have been killed as clashes erupted in parts of Afghanistan's eastern Khost province on Friday. More than 200 armed rebels attacked border police checkpoints in the province's Ali Shir and Tarizai districts in the morning. Heavy fighting lasted for around 5 hours. Two border police officers died and five others were injured during the clash. The mountainous Khost province that borders Pakistan's lawless Waziristan tribal area has seen increasing militancy in recent years. Clash leaves 8 militants dead, wounds 19 in E. Afghanistan Meanwhile, another clash between Taliban militants and government forces has left eight insurgents dead and 19 others injured in eastern Afghanistan's Laghman province. A group of militants raided a local police checkpoint in the Shahid Baba area on Friday's morning. Police retaliated, killing eight insurgents in the gun battle which followed. Taliban militants have waged several attacks on government installations across the country since their so-called annual spring offensive began on April 24. Chilean volcano Calbuco erupts again The Calbuco in Chile has erupted for the third time in eight days, firing out a new cloud of ash and gas. Calbuco had been quiet for around a week after springing back to life last weekend. The new eruption has forced another 15-hundred people from their homes. Authorities say the latest eruption isn't as powerful as the first ones. Calbuco sprung back to life last week, ejecting some 200-million tonnes of ash. This has forced hundreds to flee their homes. Expo Milano 2015 openning soon The Milan Expo 2015 is expected to officially open on Friday in Milan, Italy. The expo brings together more than 145 countries, representing 94 percent of the world's population to focus on food and nutrition. 145 nations are participating in the event, more than 50 of which have built their own pavilions to contribute to a global discussion about food and nutrition. As the second largest foreign pavilion afetr Germany's at the 2015 expo, the China pavilion will open to the public on Friday and remain open for six months. China manufacturing business activity improves slightly in April Latest statistics show Chinese manufacturing business activity continued to improve in April. As a key measure of factory activity in China, official data shows the manufacturing purchasing managers' index came in at 50.1 in April, unchanged from March's reading but up from 49.9 for February. An analyst from the National Bureau of Statistics says Chinese companies are cautiously optimistic about the country's economic growth prospects, thanks to a series of encouraging signals in both the Chinese and global economy and a price rebound in commodities such as oil. China unveils measures to shore up job market China's State Council is to annouce four measures in a circular on Friday designed to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation and create more jobs. The circular says the local governments need to implement more pro-active employment policies and encourage mass entrepreneurship and startups, in order to boost the country's economy. The Chinese government has pledged to create more than 10 million urban jobs this year and ensure that the registered urban unemployment rate does not rise above 4.5 percent.
