China, S. Korea sign FTA as new growth engine China and South Korea have signed a free trade agreement in Seoul. The pact aims to serve as an all-round cooperative platform for both governments and private companies to seek new growth engines. It is the largest-ever bilateral FTA deal for China in terms of trade volume. Under the accord, South Korea plans to eliminate tariffs on 92 percent of all products from China within 20 years. Meanwhile, China is set to abolish tariffs on 91 percent of all South Korean goods. The two countries started the FTA talks covering 17 areas in 2012. China to stage live-fire drill in Yunnan The Chinese army is going to start a live-ammunition drill on Tuesday in Yunnan, close to the border with Myanmar. A Military official says the joint drill involves troops from China's armed forces and Air Force. It has been scheduled in accordance with training plans. No aircraft is set to be allowed to enter the airspace of the drill without permission. Also, vehicles entering the drill areas in Gengma and Zhenkang counties will be subject to traffic controls. Locals will not be allowed to enter the drill areas without a permit. Chinese authorities have informed Myanmar of the drill, and the end date will be announced later. Seven dead, one missing after central China gas leak 7 people have been confirmed dead and another is missing after a gas leak at a coal mine in Hunan province. The accident happened on Saturday Shaoyang City, central China's Hunan Province, when 11 people were working underground to improve the mine's productivity. 3 managed to escape and 7 have died. Rescuers are still searching for the missing person. Senior energy official indicted for graft An official of the National Energy Administration has been indicted for alleged bribery, after he was found to hiding more than 200 million yuan, or some 32 million U.S. dollars in cash at his house. Wei Pengyuan, former deputy head of the coal department of the National Energy Administration, was indicted by local prosecutors in north China's Hebei Province. He was also charged with amassing huge amounts of income from unclear sources. A Prosecutor has since confirmed that this has become the largest such case involving dirty cash since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949. Charity program gives orphans free health insurance More than 60-thousand Chinese orphans nationwide have received free health insurance contracts as a gift for Children's Day. The insurance is sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs and the China Children's Insurance Foundation. It is designed for the children of poor families and officially registered orphans under 18 years old. Each child is insured for 100-thousand yuan, or nearly 16-thousand U.S. dollars at a premium of 50 yuan a year to cover the cost of treating 12 critical illnesses. Taiwan recalls all products from contaminated saline solution production line Taiwan's drug authority is set to withdraw products from a drug company after discovering that a contaminated sodium chloride solution caused adverse reactions in 12 patients. Samples of the solution are found to have been contaminated with an emerging bacterial pathogen during production. The agency has ordered a continued suspension of the related production line and withdrawal of all its products from shelves. The authority says the incident is not likely to cause a shortage in the products withdrawn because other manufacturers in Taiwan have sufficient supplies. The drug company has been asked to conduct an investigation into the matter. IOC publishes evaluation report on 2022 bids The International Olympic Committee has released an assessment report by the Evaluation Commission. This is prior to the IOC 2022 Briefing for IOC Members, which will take place from June 9 to 10. The report highlights the strengths and challenges associated with hosting the Olympic Winter Games in both candidate cities, Almaty in Kazakhstan and Beijing in China. It is also the first of its kind following the unanimous approval of Olympic Agenda 2020, the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, last December. Vietnam, U.S. sign Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations Vietnam and the United States have signed a joint vision statement on defense relations in Hanoi. The statement was inked by the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense. It guides defense relationship between the two countries on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding for Advancing Bilateral Defense Cooperation signed in 2011. It involves cooperation in dealing with war legacies, sharing experiences in search and rescue operations, as well as launching bilateral dialogues and discussions. 42 charged in Bangladesh's worst-ever industrial tragedy Bangladesh police have submitted charge-sheets against 42 people who involve the country's worst-ever industrial tragedy that claimed over 11-hundred lives. The criminal investigation department submits the charge-sheets in two separate cases to court. One is for killing the people while another for violating building code. Around 750 people are being made witnesses in both cases. Of the accused, all but 4 people, inducing building owner Sohel Rana, have been granted bail and are now staying outside the jail. The nine-storey building, Rana Plaza, built in 2013.
