China, U.S. focus on climate in key annual dialogue
China and the United States have been holding meetings connected to climate change as part of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue underway in Washington.
Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi are leading the Chinese delegation.
Wang Yang is calling for more cooperation between the two countries in clean coal technology, nuclear technology, shale gas development and renewable energy.
On the US side, both U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew have also pledged deeper cooperation with China on climate change.
Chinese mainland reiterates no interference in Taiwan election
The mainland's Taiwan affairs office is blasting suggestions its moving to "citizenize" people from Taiwan by removing barriers to make it easier to travel to the mainland.
Changes are being brought on in July 1st which will no longer require people from Taiwan to require special permits.
A number of politicans which back independence in Taiwan claim the move is an attempt to make people from Taiwan mainland citizens.
A spokesperson with the State Council's Taiwan Affairs office says the suggestion is not even worth refuting.
At the same time, the mainland side says it will not interfere in Taiwan's leadership election next year.
The suggestion comes on the heels of news the ruling Kuomintang preparing to nominate Hung Hsiu-chu as its next candidate.
She's currently the deputy head of Taiwan's legislature.
New traction system speeds up Chinese bullet trains
Chinese high-speed trains are being outfit with a new traction system that can run trains at up to 500-kilometers per hour.
The permanent magnet synchronous traction system is said to be more stable and secure, and more energy efficient.
The new system increases power by 60 percent while drag can be cut by up to 70 percent.
The system is already operational in Germany, Japan and France.
Newly opened pipeline starts leaking gas near Kunming
A pipeline transporting natural gas from Myanmar to China has begun leaking near Yunnan's capital, Kunming.
The leak is being brought under control.
It's unclear what caused the leak.
The pipeline itself has only been opened for around 2-weeks.
Over 90% Chinese narcotics smuggled from Golden Triangle
New analysis is suggesting the so-called Golden Triangle in southeast Asia remains the largest drug source for Chinese drug traffickers.
A new national study suggests over 90-percent of the drugs seized in China last year by authorities originated from the Golden Triangle.
The same report also notes heroin imported from Afghanistan accounts for close to 1.5 percent of the total seizures last year.
Meanwhile, cocaine from South America has been detected across 12 different provinces.
Typhoon Kujira strikes Vietnam
Tropical storm Kujira is now rolling into Vietnam, after dousing Hainan with much needed rain for the past couple of days.
It has made landfall in Vietnam's northeast afternoon, bringing heavy rainfall.
Kujira is forecast to move northwest in the coming day, and then weaken into a tropical depression.
Vietnam's natural disaster prevention departments have issued flooding and landslide warnings in certian areas.
Broad TPP deal could be reached by end of July
12 different countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations are reportedly poised to meet as a group before the end of July.
Japan's Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister is suggesting that it's necessary to hold a ministerial meeting of TPP countries next month.
His comments come on the heels of the U.S. Senate endorsing a plan to wrap up deliberations and take a vote on a crucial bill soon.
The TPP would involve Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.
Australia commits 718 mln USD for China-initiated bank
Australia's government has announced it's been accepted as a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
The Australian side is putting in over 700 million US dollars into the bank.
This will make Australia the 6th largest shareholder in the bank.
The China-proposed bank is expected to begin operating later this year with start-up capital of around 100-billion U.S. dollars.
S. Korea protests DPRK's sentencing of 2 detainees
South Korea is blasting the "unilateral sentencing" of two of its nationals to hard labor for life in North Korea.
South Korean authorities are dismissing the verdict as "unacceptable".
North Korea's highest court has sentenced the two to life imprisonment for subversion, espionage and illegal entry.
At the same time, South Korea is also calling on Pyongyang to release the two detainees.
One of the two is accused of trying to topple the North Korean government through subversion by spreading religious materials.
The other is accused of recruiting people to collect soil samples around North Korea's main nuclear facility.
Heat wave kills 748 people in Pakistan's Karachi
A heat wave which has been gripping the southern Pakistani city of Karachi is being blamed for killing around 750 people.
Local official temperatures have reached highs of around 45 degrees, breaking records some 35-years old.
