Nickelodeon has announced plans to produce the world premiere of 'The SpongeBob Musical' bound for the Chicago stage.
Though the musical is based on the famous cartoon series, the music is no kiddie stuff.
Grammy awards winning singer John Legend will write songs for the musical.
Musicians including David Bowie, Plain White T's, The Flaming Lips, and Lady Antebellum will provide original music for the show as well.
American playwright and theatre director Tina Landau is going to helm the show, and US composer Tom Kitt of 'Next To Normal' will serve as musical supervisor.
And the cast list will be announced soon.
Producers praise the show "a celebration of unbridled hope, unexpected heroes, and pure theatrical invention".
SpongeBob is not the first kids' material that makes the leap to stage: 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown' and 'Annie' both have been turned into stage plays before.
'The SpongeBob Musical 'is scheduled to be staged next June 7th at Chicago's Oriental theater.
