China vows more ASEAN maritime cooperation Chinese vice Premier Zhang Gaoli has proposed to step up maritime cooperation with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He made the remarks while address the opening ceremony of the 12th China-ASEAN Expo today in south China's Nanning city. Zhang says that peace and stability in the South China Sea is important to regional development and prosperity, and is in the common interests of countries in the region. He suggests more regional cooperation is needed in the maritime economy and communication, and in scientific research, environmental protection, and maritime safety. This year has been named "the year of China-ASEAN maritime cooperation." China's housing market continues recovery China's housing market continued to pick up in August with new home prices marking a year-on-year rise. Average new home prices of 70 large and medium-sized cities increased 1.7 percent compared with a drop of 0.4 percent in July. The National Bureau of Statistics says more cities are seeing price increases in both new and second-hand houses. China-France Economic and Financial Dialogue Kicks off The third China-France High-Level Economic and Financial Dialogue has kicked off in Beijing. Officials will consult with each other on issues such as the macroeconomic landscape and policies, global governance, bilateral cooperation in finance, as well as cooperation in market, industry and major projects. Senior economic and financial officials from both sides are attending the dialogue. High-speed railway to open in NE China A new high-speed rail line linking two major cities in northeast China is set to open. The railway in Jilin will link Hunchun, near the border of North Korea and Russia, with the provincial capital. It's the first passenger rail link between the two cities. It will extend 360 kilometers with nine stations and run at a speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The project broke ground in 2011 and was put into trial operation last month. Intel to invest in Chinese tech firms U.S. chip giant Intel has decided to invest around 67 million U.S. dollars in eight Chinese tech companies. The eight firms are mainly involved in cutting-edge smart devices, robots, the Internet of things, cloud services, big data and data analysis. Since it started to invest in the Chinese market in 1998, Intel has pumped nearly 2 billion U.S. dollars into around 140 firms, 35 of which have either gone public or been acquired. Death Toll in Chilean Quake Rises to 12, Major Damages Reported There are now 12 confirmed deaths from the powerful earthquake that struck Chile on Wednesday. The attack was launched early on Friday morning. The militants entered the camp and rushed to the mosque, killing 16 people praying inside. After an hour long encounter, the army killed 13 militants while a clearance operation continues in the area. Local media reports say the Taliban has taken credit of the attack. Croatia closes 7 border crossings with Serbia due to refugee crisis Croatia has closed its seven border crossings with Serbia after seeing the influx of more than 11,000 refugees in one day. The closure on Thursday night led to a six-kilometer-long queue of trucks waiting to enter Croatia, while on the other side of the road is a two-kilometer-long line of vehicles waiting to enter Serbia. Serbian media report that only the border crossing of Bajakovo is open, and refugees from the Middle East and Africa keep marching through corn fields into Croatia. Authorities did not say for how long the crossings will remain closed. Croatia has said it is overwhelmed by the influx of migrants, after its neighbor Hungary closed the Hungary-Serbia border on Tuesday to keep the migrants out. Australian Chief of Army makes introductory visit to Singapore Australia's Army Chief has met with Singapore's Minister for Defense during his introductory visit to the city state. China, Britain should deepen health coop: Chinese vice premier Chinese vice Premier Liu Yandong has urged China and Britain to strengthen health cooperation and help deal with global health challenges. Liu made the remarks on Thursday at the UK-China Health Policy Dialogue in London. She says health cooperation has expanded and deepened since the China-Britain high-level cultural exchange was launched three years ago.
