The Golden Rooster awards, major movie awards in China, will be announced during the closing ceremony of the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival in northeast China's Jilin Province tonight. This year, more than 270 films are competing for 20 awards.
Director Xu Ke's "The Taking of Tiger Mountain" leads with 9 nominations, while "The Golden Era" has seven.
Competing for best picture are the Tibetan story "Phurbu & Tenzin", "Wolf Totem" adapted from the popular namesake novel, War movie "Wolf Warriors", Tang Wei's "The Golden Era" and "The Taking of Tiger Mountain".
Chinese actress Zhao Wei has been nominated for the best actress award for her role in the movie "Dearest".
I'm very happy about the nomination, as it shows judges' affirmation of my acting. I think the Golden Rooster award is significant. I received the award for best new director back in 2013, and I'm grateful for the nomination as best actress this time. Actually, it may be my biggest opportunity to win this award since this is a break-through role for me.
Another highlight was the return the Best Editing category after a 14-year absence.
Kang Jianmin from the organizing committee says this improvement is quite significant.
"The addition of Best Editing as an award category this year also made the Golden Rooster Award more professional. And professionalism is exactly what Golden Rooster always advocates."
The Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival will be held in Tangshan, Hebei Province, next year.
The Festival includes the Golden Rooster Awards, which recognize professional expertise, and the Hundred Flowers Awards, which are decided by popular vote.
The two awards are each presented every alternate year.
A life update from the ongoing ceremony: Zhang Yi won the best supporting actor for his role in "Dearest", and Deng Jiajia received best supporting actress for her acting in the movie "Silent Witness."
