Tennis: Williams returns to WTA top 10 after victory in Zhuhai In tennis, Venus Williams has climbed back into the WTA top-10 rankings in the first time in some 4-years. The 35-year old Williams will start out next year's WTA season ranked 10th in the world after downing Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 7-6 to win the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai this afternoon. Williams had to fight off a resurgent Pliskova in the first set, after having her down 4-games-1 at one point, and then claw her own way back after being down a break in the 2nd set to seal the win today. The victory for the elder Williams, who has been struggling the past few years with injuries and an auto-immune disease, is her second of the year in China after she took the crown at the Wuhan Open in early October. She also made it to the semi-finals in Hong Kong before bowing out to eventual winner Jelena Jankovic. For Pliskova, the loss to Williams this afternoon keeps the 23-year old Czech back outside the top-10 heading into next season. The young Czech cracked the top-10 for the first time earlier this year, but has struggled through the 2nd half of this season, including a first-round exit at the China Open this past month. --- On the men's side, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have made it to the final of the Paris Masters. Top-seeded Djokovic rallied after dropping the 2nd set to Stan Wawrinka, but rallied in strong form to win his semi-final match 6-3, 3-6, 6-love. Djokovic is set to face Andy Murray in the final in Paris after he rolled over Spain's David Ferrer in the other semi-final 6-4, 6-3. The Paris Masters is the final tournament before the top-8 men in the world head to England to start the ATP Finals in London. That gets underway next Sunday. It appears Kei Nishikori will be able to take part in the event. Nishikori, who heads into the ATP Finals as the 7th seed, pulled out of the Paris Masters on Tuesday with a back injury. However, his management says he's fine and is heading to London a week early to practice before next Sunday's first matches get underway. Golf: Scotland's Russel Knox wins HSBC Championships In golf, Scotland's Russel Knox has taken this year's HSBC Championships in Shanghai. The Scotsman managed to save par on both the par-3 17th and par-5 18th after knocking in his 3rd birdie on the back-9 on 16 to maintain a 2-stroke victory this Sunday. Knox carded a 4-under-68 today to finish the tournament at minus-20. 3rd round leader, American Kevin Kisner drained a birdie on the 18th to finish alone in 2nd at minus-18. China's Li Haotong, who started out the day in a tie for 3rd, struggled a bit today, ending Sunday's round at even par to finish his tournament tied for 7th at minus-15, along with world number-1 Jordan Spieth and two others. The round of the day went to England's Danny Willet. Willet, who started the day way down the leaderboard tied for 25th, unloaded with 6-birdies on the front-9 and 4 on the back to finish with a blistering final round 10-under-62, good enough to put him into a tie for 3rd with fellow England golfer Ross Fisher. --------- On the women's side, Defending champion Lin Xiyu has managed to retain her title at the Sanya Ladies Open. Lin firing a final round-65 to take a two-stroke victory over fellow Chinese golfer Yan Jing at the Ladies European Tour event in Hainan. World number-8 Feng Shanshan rounded out the podium for China, finishing 3rd at minus-10. ---------- Over in Japan at this week's LPGA stop, It was South Korea's Ahn Sun-ju winning in a playoff over fellow South Korean Lee Ji-hee and American Angela Stanford to win the Japan Classic. Football: Evergrande holds Al-Ahli to draw in AFC Champions League final In football, Guangzhou Evergrande is heading home for the 2nd leg of the AFC Champions League finals in solid shape. The Chinese Super League champions managed to hold UAE side Al Ahli to a scoreless draw in this morning's first leg of the AFC final. Guangzhou head coach Luiz Scolari. "It was a difficult match for both teams - we tried in the game and we were able to create some opportunities but without result, and the winner will be determined in the second leg in Guangzhou." Guangzhou captain Zheng Zhi and Yu Hanchao were both denied by Al Ahli's goalkeeper. Midfielder Huang Bowen hammered one which hit the underside of the crossbar early in the 2nd half. Guangzhou is now looking to take back the AFC title they won 2-years ago. The second leg of the AFC Finals will be played in Guangzhou on November 21st. ------------------------- From the English Premier League, A marker from Marko Arnautovic was enough to give Stoke a 1-victory over struggling Chelsea. Stoke manager Mark Hughes. "They're going through a period, a surprising period for them, but not for anybody else and I think the Premier League, certainly this year the middle group of teams is a challenge for the top teams I think." Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was not at the match, as he was serving-out a one-match stadium ban for calling out the officials. It's Chelsea's 3rd loss in a row in league play, something the club hasn't done since 1999. It's also Chelsea's 7th loss in 12 league matches, leaving the Blues 16th on the table. In other action last night from the Premiership, It was New Castle earning a much-needed victory to pull itself out of the relegation zone, downing fellow bottom-dwellers Bournemouth 1-nil. Man-U dumped West Brom Albion 2-nil. Southampton edged Sunderland 1-nil. Everton and West Ham United drew 1-1. Norwich got past Swansea 1-nil. And Leicester City has moved into a temporary 1st place tie for first on points with a 2-1 victory over Watford. However, League leaders Manchester City have a chance to advance ahead on both points and goal differential tonight when take on Aston Villa. City manager Manuel Pellegrini says despite Villa's current standing in the League, they're not taking the match lightly. "They are at the bottom of the table, they are with a new manager so the motivation to try and not be relegated will be high and it's very important, and I talked with the players, to repeat what we did against Seville in the Champions (League) and not think that because we played well in the last game, we're going to play exactly the same way." A 3-1 win over Seville in their last match has ensured City a place in the next stage of the Champions League with two games to spare. ------------- In the other Premier League matches tonight, Arsenal, which is currently tied with Man City and Leicester City at the top of the table with 25-points, will be in a tough test as they play out the annual North London Derby against Tottenham. The other match tonight has Liverpool taking on Crystal Palace. NFL: 3 undefeated teams play Sunday IN the National Football League, The bulk of the games in Week 9 of the NFL season are set to get underway early tomorrow morning. Among them, Carolina, New England and Denver are set to try to keep up with Cincinatti for the best record in the league. All three are 7-0, and will be looking to match the Bengals' 8-0 record, which they achieved after their 31-10 victory over Cleveland in the Thursday night match-up. Of the 3 undefeated teams, Carolina has the much tougher battle to remain perfect on the season. The Panthers are at home to the 6-1 Green Bay Packers. The Patriots entertain the 3-4 Washington Red Skins. Denver is on the road in Indianapolis to take on the 3-5 Colts. Another game of interest tomorrow morning is the New York Giants taking on the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. This game will mark Jason Pierre-Paul's return to the Giants line-up. The star defensive-end is returning back to his team's line-up 4-months after he blew off his index finger on his right hand in a fireworks accident just before the start of the season. Pierre-Paul's return should help bolster the Giants' chances of making the playoffs, because even at 4-4, they're still leading the dismal NFC East divsion, which includes 3-4 Washington, 3-4 Philadelphia and 2-5 Dallas. Basketball: Full boat as all teams in action tonight in CBA In basketball, Round 3 of this year's CBA season is all taking place tonight, with all 20-teams in the league in action. From the NBA this morning, The Golden State Warriors remain perfect on the season. Stephen Curry picked up his pace after a sluggish first half, scoring 21 of his 24-points in the last 24-minutes to give Golden State a 103-94 victory over Sacramento. -- Atlanta continues its strong play, winning its 7th in a row, downing Washington 114-99. -- Minnesota got past Chicago 102-93. -- It was Orlando over Philly 105-97. -- The Brooklyn Nets are still looking for their first victory of the season after going down to Milwaukee 94-86. -- San Antonio dumped Charlotte 114-94. -- It was Dallas over New Orleans 107-98. The Pelicans are also winless on the season. -- Utah edged Memphis 89-79. -- And it was James Harden with 46 points to lead Houston over the LA Clippers 109-105. Its Harden's 2nd straight game where he's scored over 40-points for the Rockets. Badminton: Sun Yu comes up short at Korean Open In badminton, Defending champion China has progressed to the finals of this year's World Junior Mixed Team Championships with a 3-2 win over Malaysia. China will be taking on Indonesia in the final, after that squad who cruised past Chinese Taipei 3-1.
