The latest 'Star Wars' movie is on track to top one billion US dollars in ticket sales.
Reuters reports that 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is set to surpass one billion dollars no later than Sunday, making it the fastest-ever film to reach that level.
Walt Disney Company said on Saturday that the movie has achieved box office receipts of 890.3 million dollars, in the period ending December 25th.
'Jurassic World' is the current record holder for being the fastest to gross one billion dollars, which took 13 days to reach this result.
Disney also announced that this seventh 'Star Wars' installment has set a US and Canadian record for largest box office on Christmas day, by pulling in 49.3 million dollars.
This figure has already topped the previous record of 24.6 million dollars, set by 'Sherlock Holmes' in 2009.
Disney purchased the 'Star Wars' franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012, and it's now planning a new trilogy of films as well as standalone installments through 2019.
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' will open in China, the world's second biggest movie market on January 9th.
Staying in US Christmas box-office, comedy film 'Daddy's Home', starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, opened in second spot.
It had generated ticket sales of 15.7 million dollars by Friday.
Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell's third collaboration 'Joy' landed in third place.
The film, which portrays a struggling Long Island single mom who eventually finds success on a TV shopping network, had earned 6.9 million dollars in sales by Christmas Day.
