'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' has failed to dominate the box office in South Korea, as it proved no match for homegrown film 'The Himalayas'.
Released on December 16th, 'The Himalayas' has now reigned over South Korea's box office for two weeks, pulling in roughly 33 billion Korean won, or some 29.7 million US dollars in ticket sales.
Directed by Lee Seok-hoon, the adventure film is based on true events.
It depicts a renowned mountaineer who risks all to retrieve the body of his late colleague from the death zone of Chomolungma, also known as Mount Everest.
The Yonhap News Agency earlier reported that the film had set a new Christmas Day record with over 700,000 viewers, dethroning the 2013 South Korean hit 'The Attorney'.
'The Himalayas' premiered in major U.S. cities on December 18th, two days after it opened in South Korea.
It is also set to open in theaters across Australia, Japan and Middle Eastern regions.
Himalayas was pre-sold to 63 territories including France, India and Thailand following its showcase during the American Film Market last month.
Staying at South Korea's box office, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' has taken 21.7 billion Korean won, landing in second spot.
Rounding out the top three is American 3D animation 'Hotel Transylvania 2', with some 5 billion Korean won in ticket sales.
