As the Chinese lunar New Year is approaching, organizers of the annual Spring Festival Gala have once again become the center of attention. Organizers yesterday published their mascot for this year, the Year of the Monkey, and instantly it became a hit on the Internet. The "Kang Kang", which means "healthy" in Chinese, is a monkey sketch made by Chinese contemporary artist Han Meilin, who also designed the "Fuwa" mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Unfortunately some people deemed it "very ugly" as the 3D version of the mascot image failed to deliver the cute and joyful look from the original ink painting. Wang Shuang is one of them. "I think the 3D version of the mascot is too ugly, very disappointing. The 3D presentation is contrary to the original ink painting. The ink painting of Kang Kang successfully demonstrated Chinese features. The 3D version is not acceptable. The design of Kang Kang is good, but the 3D reconstruction is a failure." A vote by Chinese social media Sina Weibo shows that while nearly 60 percent of people "liked" the ink painting version of the monkey, only 15 percent liked the front view of the 3D version. Another 12 percent want to "change its clothes", supposedly meaning they don't like the colors.
