Chinese shares dive over 6 pct The Mainland stock markets took a major hit this Tuesday. The Shanghai Composite Index shed some 6.4 percent of its value. The main trading bourse on the Chinese mainland is now at a 13-month low. The Shenzhen Component Index also plunged nearly 7 percent on the day, while the small-cap ChiNext Index plunged 7.6 percent. The plunge comes amid another drop in oil prices, as well as profit taking ahead of the forthcoming Spring Festival holiday in early February. NBS chief under probe for suspected corruption The director of China&`&s National Bureau of Statistics has been placed under investigation for suspected corruption. Another 22 people are already under arrest. They include the board chair and vice-chair of Tianjin Ruihai International Logistics. This is the company which owned the hazardous materials warehouse that exploded in August, leaving 173 dead. Chinese, Afghan FMs meet in Beijing Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has sat down for talks with his Afghan counterpart, Salahuddin Rabbani, in Beijing. The meeting is part of Rabbani&`&s 4-day visit to China to discuss Afghanistan&`&s reconstruction and peace process. Apart from economic cooperation, the two have also talked about the current peace talks among China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States. The group held its second round of talks in Kabul last week, trying to bring the Afghan government and the Taliban into direct talks. Malaysia says debris found in Thailand not from missing MH370 Malaysian officials says debris discovered last week on a beach in southern Thailand is not from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Malaysian investigators have been examining a large section of debris that washed up on a southern Thai beach over the weekend. At this point, the only confirmed piece of the airlinerhas been found on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean. Flight MH370 was en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur in March of 2014 when it disappeared with 239 people on board, two-thirds of whom are Chinese citizens. It&`&s believed the plane went down somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. Boat capsizes off Malaysia, 13 Indonesian migrants drowned 13 bodies, believed to be illegal migrants from Indonesia, have been found on a beach in southern Malaysia. Police say the bodies have washed ashore after their boat capsized in bad conditions. The boat they were on was carrying as many as 35 people. The fate of the remaining people onboard the boat remains unclear. Many Indonesians are willing to risk their lives by traveling on unsafe boats in an attempt to work in Malaysia illegally. Islamic State claims responsibility for attack in Syria&`&s Homs: statement The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack in the Syrian government-controlled city of Homs. In an online statement, the Islamic State says one of its fighters drove a car loaded with explosives to a security checkpoint in the city and blown himself up, killing at least 30 people. Syrian state media say the attack has killed 22 people and wounded more than 100. Fire at homeless shelter kills 3, arson suspected A fire has engulfed a homeless shelter in Shenzhen, leaving 3 people dead and one injured. Surveillance camera footage suggests the fire was started by a man who was admitted to the shelter on Sunday. It&`&s believed he has a mental disorder. The person injured is being treated for minor burns. China&`&s naval hospital ship back from 142-day journey The Chinese Navy hospital ship, the Peace Ark, has returned to its port in Zhejiang following a 142-day voyage around the Pacific Ocean. The nearly 5-month tour saw the Peace Ark make port calls in Australia, French Polynesia, the United States, Mexico, Barbados, Grenada and Peru. As part of its tour, doctors and medical staff on-board carried out free clinical and humanitarian services, treating more than 17,000 people. The Peace Ark first set sail in September. Beijing universities deny reports of relocation to Hebei A number of universities based in Beijing are taking steps to refute reports they will be moved to Hebei under the new restructuring plan for the capital. Reports have been circulating, suggesting a number of universities will be moved to the coastal city of Beidaihe, which is around 300-kilometers northeast of Beijing. However, several Beijing-based universities have issued responses, saying the reports are not accurate. In an effort to ease the increasing pressure on Beijing&`&s infrastructure and resources, the municipal government is working toward shifting non-essential and non-capital related functions out of the city.
