Assad reassures Putin over cease-fire Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has told Russian President Vladimir Putin his government is ready to assist in implementing a ceasefire in Syria. Wreckage of missing Nepali plane found A small plane with 23 people on board has crashed in the mountainous Myagdi District in western Nepal. Local media say the aircraft crashed after colliding with trees. All on board have been killed. Two foreigners were among the 20 passengers -- a Chinese woman from Hong Kong and a person from Kuwait. The aircraft, operated by domestic carrier Tara Airlines, was flying from Pokhara to Jomsom, which is popular for both tourists and Hindu pilgrims. It lost contact with the control tower shortly after taking off. Death toll from tropical cyclone Winston rises to 42 in Fiji There have been 42 deaths in Fiji from cyclone Winston. Officials say the government has been gathering information on the number of people who were in urgent need of food and water. They also warn that more deaths are expected to be confirmed. The category 5 storm swept through the Pacific Island nation on Saturday, causing widespread destruction. Several countries, including China, India, New Zealand, and Australia have offered emergency aid. Trump wins big in Nevada US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has easily won the state of Nevada, cementing his lead in the race for the GOP nomination. The billionaire now has three consecutive wins, after victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina. Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are vying for second place. Mainland slams proposal to abolish Sun Yat-sen portraits in Taiwan The Chinese mainland has slammed a proposal from a legislator in Taiwan to remove portraits of Sun Yat-sen from schools and government buildings on the island. A spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office calls the move an "open trick" and says even people on the island see the proposal as a move aimed at severing ties between the mainland and Taiwan. The official says its' an attempt to sabotage cross-Strait peace and stability, and the status quo of peaceful development. Sun Yat-sen had a leading role in the 1911 revolution that overthrew the imperial Qing Dynasty, ending more than two thousand years of feudal rule. Gated communities will open 'gradually', says ministry Chinese authorities have rushed to defend and clarify a controversial policy that calls for opening up gated communities to public road systems. The new policy has drawn wide criticism, with many voicing safety and other concerns. In an online statement, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development says the government will not take the one-size-fits-all approach in opening up gated communities. It has also emphasized that the legal rights of residents will be protected. Earlier, the country's top court said the community road rule still needs legislative support. HK sees 2.4-pct economic growth in 2015: official report Official figures show that Hong Kong's economy grew 2.4 percent in 2015 compared to the previous year. It's the fourth consecutive year that the growth number has been below the 10-year average of 3.4 percent. The unemployment rate was a low 3.3 percent, with headline inflation coming in at 3 percent. Exports in Asia have been impacted by weakness in the global economy and the volatility of financial markets.
