"The Mermaid" Becomes First Chinese Movie to Gross 500 Million U.S. Dollars
Stephen Chow's The Mermaid achieved a new milestone on Saturday by becoming first ever Chinese movie to gross over 3.13 billion Yuan, or 500 million U.S. dollars, at the country's box office.
Data from Ent Group said that the film grossed 8.18 million U.S. dollars on Saturday and ended the day with 502.9 million U.S. dollars.
It took only 27 days for this Stephen Chow directed movie to reach this milestone since its debut on the first day of the Chinese New Year holidays on Feb. 9.
Moreover, the movie also took merely 12 days to out-do the previous Chinese box office record of the action and animation film "Monster Hunt" which grossed 382 million U.S. dollars.
Last week, the movie was granted a further three month extension in Chinese cinemas, buoyed by its sensational run at the box office.
According to data from Chinese film authority, China's box office business surpassed North America's in the last month of February, with the Chinese box office grossing 6.87 billion Yuan, or 1.05 billion U.S. dollars as compared to approximately 790 million U.S. dollars earned by the North American box office in the same month.
