Renowned Peking Opera artist Mei Baojiu, the ninth son of artistic master Mei Lanfang, passed away on Monday at the age of 82. Beijing Peking Opera Theater announced the master died of sudden respiratory arrest at 11 am today. Mei was Born in Shanghai in 1934 and carried on the family tradition of Peking Opera. Mei Baojiu shared fame with his father for multiple plays, including the household name 'Lady General Mu Takes Command,' 'Farewell My Concubine,' and 'The Story of Yang Guifei.' He was highly acclaimed as a performer of the Dan role type in Peking Opera and Kunqu opera. He also served as the leader of Mei Lanfang Peking Opera troupe at Beijing Peking Opera Theater. In the last twenty years, the master was dedicated to teaching. He cultivated more than twenty students, including Li Shengsu, Dong Yuanyuan and Zhang Jing. During China's annual political sessions in March this year, Mei Baojiu also put forward a proposal on protecting traditional culture and national operas, in order to make more teenagers be interested in the country's cultural heritage.
