China officially announce Perrin as head coach of national football team
The Chinese Football Association has officially presented Allain Perrin to the public as the new head coach of the Chinese men's National Football Team.
The association's chairman Cai Zhenhua and Vice Chairman Wei Jixiang, as well as Perrin were all present at a press conference in the southern city of Guangzhou.
Wei Jixiang says the Frenchman has rich training experience and an outstanding coaching record, and is familiar with football in Asia.
He says he believes the Chinese team will make progress during Perrin's tenure.
For his part, Perrin says he aims to bring the Chinese team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and help it improve its international ranking.
It's reported that Perrin has signed a three-year contract and will receive a yearly salary of up to one million US dollars.
The 58-year-old began his coaching career in 1983.
The Chinese national football team made a World Cup appearance in 2002, and made it to the final of the 2004 Asian Cup.
But the last few years have been rather lacklustre for the team.
Since 2011 they've lost ten of their nineteen matches.
Spurs see off Dnipro in Europa League
Tottenham Hotspur earned a 3-1 win over Dnipro in Europa League's final 32.
After a gloomy start to 2014 for English Premier League teams in Europe, Tottenham Hotspur achieved what five rivals failed to do - win.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City all opened the UEFA Champions League knockout phase with first-leg losses, while Chelsea earned a draw.
Tottenham overturned a 1-0 deficit against Dnipro to win 3-1 at White Hart Lane and advance to the Round of 16.
After the match, Tim Sherwood, Tottenham Hotspur head coach, seemed satisfied with the performance of his players.
"Many of you probably thought we were dead and buried when they went 1-0 up but the lads really did show belief. It is about getting back on the horse straight away and we within five minutes after and then the belief grew, the fans were fantastic and it was electric out there after. It was only us that were going to keep scoring, I felt."
Meanwhile, Swansea's Europa League ambitions came to a crashing halt as they lost 3-1 to Napoli in Naples.
NBA roundup
The Miami Heat used a huge third quarter to rout the New York Knicks 108-82.
LeBron James scored 31 points, Dwyane Wade added 23.
James wore a mask during the game to protect his broken nose. The mask did not impede the league's Most Valuable Player, as he made 13 of 19 shots and passed 30 points for the fifth consecutive game.
It was the sixth straight win for the Heat. The Knicks are to 2-10 in February.
Meanwhile, the Washington Wizard outlasted the Toronto Raptors, earning their fifth straight victory, 134-129.
Trevor Ariza scored the go-ahead basket on a fast-break layup with 1:20 left in the third overtime.
The Indiana Pacers rallied to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 101-96.
Roy Hibbert had 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Paul George and Lance Stephenson each scored 18 points for NBA-leading Indiana.
Ferrer retires as Anderson and Dolgopolov advance to the semifinals
In tennis,
Spain's David Ferrer retired from the Mexican Open quarterfinals with an upper thigh injury midway through his second set with South Africa's Kevin Anderson.
In other action, Ukraine's Alexander Dolgopolov advanced to the semifinals with a straight sets 6-4, 7-6 victory over Croatia's Ivo Karlovic.
Meanwhile, Andy Murray dug deep to beat Gilles Simon 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the quarter-finals.
Second seeded Murray now reaches his first semi-final since undergoing back surgery last September.
Simon had been attempting to end an 11-match losing streak against the 26-year-old Scot.
His lone victory against Murray came seven years ago, in their first meeting.
Mcllroy leads in first round of Honda Classic
In golf,
Rory McIlroy has the first round lead at the Honda Classic after carding a seven-under-par 63, good for a one-shot advantage over Russell Henley.
It's a good day for McIlroy, who made a 45-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole to reach four-under.
McIlroy birdied on 17, dropping to six under par, then blasted out of a bunker on 18 with a brilliant shot that left him just five feet from the cup.
The 24-year-old from Northern Ireland birdied the 18th to post that seven-under-par 63.
He says he is content with the score.
"I felt like I was in control of my ball all day hit a lot of fairways hit a lot of greens and I actually made quite a few putts and something you need to do here it's a golf course you can't really fake it around here you have to really play well to shoot good scores and I was able to do that today."
On the ninth hole, Tiger Woods' approach shot came to a rest ten feet from the cup.
Woods would sink a birdie putt to get to plus one.
But the 38 year-old wouldn't enjoy that kind of success on the greens all day.
In his first tournament in a month, Woods couldn't make a birdie putt early on and had to scramble for pars late in his round. A birdie on the last hole gave him a 71, leaving him eight shots behind the leader.
Adam Scott was in fine form on the greens. Scott made birdie on the seventh, an effort of 18 feet, to take his score to one-under.
Later on the 18th, Scott made a ten-foot birdie putt to get to two under par.
On the third hole, Nicolas Thompson made a 17-foot birdie putt to get down to two-under.
