In the trailer, a secret agent played by Sun Honglei wears a top hat and looks grave. He is about to shoot an enemy general, but he changes his mind when he finds the general dancing with a girl who is played by Kwai Lun-Mei.
Sun Honglei and Kwai Lun-Mei, in fact, play a pair of lovers in the film set in wartime Republic of China. Though the pair deeply fall in love with each other, war has driven them apart. Every encounter of them is short and in a tense and dangerous situation, but their love remains alive.
Director Zhao Baogang explains the theme that his movie tries to convey.

"If there's a lover in your heart throughout your lifetime despite that you may neither marry him or her nor live together as a family, you have that partner staying eternally in your heart. This is a theme of love I try to convey via my movie. Hence Fu Jingnian is such a person that kept his lover forever deep in his heart."
Ren Baoru is one of the two writers for the play. She has cooperated for many years with the director. At Wednesday's press conference, Ren said she and Gao Xuan, another play-writer of the film, are both well aware that Zhao Baogang is good at using his works to explore the theme of love.
Ren Baoru also said they had thought actor Sun Honglei didn't suit that role well.

"The director decided the theme of this film would be love when he first discussed the content with us. We are aware although it would be a spy film, it should be a love story. Talking about the character portrayed by Sun Honglei, I used to believe Sun is too old for him. But as soon as we watched the part Sun performs, we were given a pleasant surprise."
Taiwan actress Kwai Lun-Mei costars as a dance-teacher in 'One Step Away'. She is particularly fascinated about the way she dresses in her new movie.

"I have been looking forward to acting in a film set in a background back to the era of Republic of China and dreaming to wear a Qipao or cheongsam in shooting. Finally I realized the dream via this film."
The film also stars famous Chinese actress Xu Jinglei, Hong Kong actor Alex Fong and actress Ada Choi.
Although Zhao Baogang has 30 years of experience in shooting TV series, the Film 'One Step Away' is his first attempt to touch the big screen. 'One Step Away' will meet Chinese mainland audiences on the 19th of September.
