Topic 1: Stars involved in drug use won't be hired After several celebrities have been detained on drug charges over the past few months, the Beijing Trade Association for Performances joined by 42 performing art agencies and groups have signed a commitment, promising that they will not hire any actors who are involved in drug use. The organizations and companies also pledged to educate employees about anti-drug laws regularly and urge employees not to use illegal drugs. Police said since January, more than 7,800 people have been detained for taking drugs in Beijing, an increase of about 72 percent year-on-year. In the past four months, at least 9 celebrities have been charged with drug use. Topic 2: China plans online sales tax The State Administration of Taxation is soliciting ideas about levying a sales tax on e-commerce. It's not the first time the issue has come under the spotlight. The plan to levy online sales tax was raised in 2012 but stalled due to a lack of feasibility, as most small online retailers don't register their businesses. As China's e-commerce market grows rapidly, the issue has become increasingly pressing. According to statistics from the China E-commerce Research Center, the value of China's e-commerce industry surpassed 10 trillion yuan ($1.6 trillion) in 2013, while the US e-commerce value was $262 billion. More than 300 million people shopped online, a nearly 25 percent year-on-year increase. Big online retailers such as JD.com and Suning.com are promoting the use of electronic receipts, currently only available in a few regions. They prefer a large-scale online sales tax so that the competition could be leveled.
