To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the premiere of hit sitcom "Friends", a replica of the characters' regular hangout - Central Perk - has been set up. Central Perk is where Rachel, Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica and Phoebe spent most of their time on the show.
This Central Perk is manned by "Friends" barista Gunther - a character played by James Michael Tyler. He appeared at the Central Perk pop-up.
"I did this specifically because it's 20 years and I figured this was such a huge part of my life and it changed my life in so many ways that the least I could do would be to bleach my hair and come back here to New York - which, hey, I get to come to New York and hang out in this amazing replica of the coffee shop where I spent so much time."
The fully functional cafe has been set up by Warner Brothers - which produced "Friends" - and Eight O'Clock coffee. Tyler says it was created for the fans.
"We have a lot of the props from the show, we're going to have live performances every Friday here, free coffee - you can't beat that - and it's free Eight O'Clock coffee so it's just a wonderful way to celebrate Warner Brothers and 'Friends, an iconic show,"
Among the items featured at the cafe are outfits the cast wore, memorabilia such as a fake Soap Opera Digest with news on Joey's character being killed off, and scripts signed by the cast.
And, Tyler notes - the setup wouldn't be complete without the orange couch.
"The first thing I noticed was the couch and then just the smell of real coffee because I never made an actual coffee in the 10 years that I worked there because the machine's really loud. So yeah, it just seems like this would be what Central Perk would be like and it is near the location, if not at the location, where the Central Perk actually - in the fictional universe existed. So it blurs the lines between reality and fantasy."
Fans can also purchase memorabilia - like "Friends" coffee cups and tee-shirts.
The Central Perk replica opens to the public Wednesday, September 17, and remains open until October 18. The coffee shop will be open Monday through Fridays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
