"It's 'Madam Secretary.' It's a little bit more, it's sort of the gal behind the seal. And Tim Daly and Bebe Neuwirth, Keith Carradine and Patina Miller. I mean, an incredible cast together. Everybody's a comedian -- literally, which we think is appropriate, given the venue."
The pilot episode shows how the Leoni character, Elizabeth McCord, is reluctantly pulled out of civilian life and into the White House, as she tries to balance her work and family life.
Leoni spent time in Washington doing her homework for the show. She says while McCord is fictional, she may shed light on the real Madam Secretary of State.

"You know, we never knew Hillary, the way we all could have and should have, in a sense, because she is a very charming, engaging, brilliant woman. We just saw her after the decisions were made. And I think this is a chance to sort of come behind the curtain and see some of the things that these extraordinary women who had to struggle with."
Critics have been comparing "Madam Secretary" to both the White House-set "The West Wing" and another TV drama featuring a powerful Washington woman, "Scandal."
Leoni says she understands why, and also shows confidence with this new story.

"I do. But I think we have shows that show the scary part of what almost happened, and shows what show the terrible nightmares that we're having about things that might be happening. And we're going to fly up the middle somehow."
