Jin Xing, in Roman mythology, is Venus; in ancient Greek mythology, the god of love; in ancient China, the force and wisdom male star. Speaking of the name that her parents gave her, Jin Xing feels that it truly represents herself.
Born to ethnic Korean parents, Jin Xing was assigned male at birth. Now she is a ballerina, a modern dancer, a choreographer and actress, and the owner of the contemporary dance company "Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Theatre". She underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1996. At the age of 33 she adopted her first son and now lives with her three adopted children and her German husband in Shanghai.
The book Powerful Speaking is a collection of 47 essays written by Jin. The articles are packed with Jin's penetrating insights and true feelings. She speaks of the beauty of females, the happiness of being a wife and a mother, inner feelings, and the truth and wisdom of life.
The subtitle of the book is "The positive energy from Jin Xing"; and Jin Xing is certainly a woman full of positive energy. Among all the adjectives fit to describe her, "true" is the most fundamental one. Being true to herself and to the others is her attitude towards life. She cannot be so powerful if she is not true to herself.
(Soundbite 1: Jin Xing, choose or give up)
"Both the actions of choosing or giving up something require courage. But responsibility is the bottom line for everything. I have been accountable for all my choices. I live my life on my abilities, but not the attitudes of anybody else. My proudest claim is that I never live my life passively. But I have paid a lot for my freedom and self-responsibility. I have no right to complain or regret things including my failures. I accept everything life gives me, for better or worse, or even incredible in my case."
Her words are as strong and powerful as her behaviors. No matter whether readers agree or not, you cannot deny that a true person speaks throughout this book.
She has not only a strong will to the respons
es of the outside world, but also a pure soul. She writes: I would rather be driven to the smallest island than twist myself up unnecessarily. She doesn't mind talking about her experiences of sex reassignment, but feels that lingering on the topic is unnecessary. For Jin Xing, it's not important whether she is a man or a woman. The most important thing is to be the truest version of Jin Xing that she can possibly be.
Objects are valued because of their rarity. Truth is one of them. And truth is Jin Xing's faith.
(Soundbite 2: Jin Xing, Truth)
"Let's put our values aside first, we must be true. On the back cover of the book, I use three words to describe myself: true, sharp and cruel. The last one is how I act towards myself. But being true is what I always trust and pursue."
However, her philosophy also has its hidden costs. In today's real society, how can people never lie? Society is the environment in which people all have to survive. It seems that the more submissive people are, the smoother their lives will be. At times, people all have to say words that go against their own conscience. But Jin Xing refuses to follow the rule.
(Soundbite 3: Jin Xing, walk away)
"If I was forced to say something against my will, I have a way to deal with it: that is leaving. I escape the situation with my behavior. I would rather choose to keep silent than tell lies, even if the escape makes someone else uncomfortable. Fortunately, my legs are still mine. I think it's very important for people to have the ability to choose independently. The ability gives people the choice to be a little further away from falsehood."
In the book she writes: Have you ever thought why there are so many grievances in our life? How can you take such grievances for granted and compromise so much and thus twist your heart? Why can't you live a better life?
More and more people are beginning to listen to Jin Xing and it is likely that those readers may become the world's next true speakers; that's the power of truth.
Being a mother and a wife were Jin Xing's dreams. The two roles have changed her identity greatly. Every time she talks about her children and her husband, she is full of happiness. She feels that they are the best gifts God has ever given to her.
(Soundbite 4: Jin Xing, family)
"Being a woman is what I want. But to be a mom and a wife, I never dared to imagine that was possible. From the perspective of social behavior, I raised three orphans. But from the sense of life, these roles provide me with recognition and serve as a reward. The God of life feels that I have the ability to raise children through observing my actions, so God gave me my three children. After loving and caring for my children for five years, God affirmed my hard work again, and sent me a husband to assist me."
She has faced an arduous journey and has become brave and strong-minded as a result. Whenever speaking, she talks with a realistic attitude. Every word she utters is full of power and testifies to the fact that she has risen from the bottom of society step by step. As she writes in her book: even the mud on the soles of her feet is a remnant of the force she has utilized in order to pursue her current life.
