Since the film For Love or Money or Lu-Shui-Hong-Yan (露水红颜) in Chinese will meet audiences in theaters on November 7th, Chinese television director Gao Xixi is promoting his feature film debut in high key.
At a press conference, Gao explained why he chose this realistic story.
"The movie tries to discuss whether love outweighs money or vise-versa. I think Amy Cheung tells a very typical story, in which the girl has been hurt by money, then she uses the money to hurt the one she falls in love with, but finally she discovers nothing can outweigh love."
The romantic drama talks about a girl from a declining aristocratic family. With her family losing wealth they used to own, she lives like an ordinary girl. She meets a mysterious artist who may not be as poor as he seems in a coffee shop. Although she tries desperately to avoid falling in love with him, a risky, but passionate love story begins.
Popular Chinese actress Crystal Liu Yifei plays the girl, named Xing Lu in the movie.
"I've read the novel, but I decided to forget the novel and exert the creative power of both the director's and mine. When I stepped into the role, I could feel a split personality of this character, which may not be well elaborated in the novel. The girl I acted in the film gets entangled in a struggle between a pure heart and her ruined inner world."
November 11th is Singles' Day in China, the holiday which encourages the unmarried to socialize and celebrate with single friends. Before and on that day is a perfect period for the release of romantic films.
Of an expected boom for romantic films in Chinese cinemas, the film For Love or Money, would draw irresistibly the attention of moviegoers, as director Gao Xixi explains.
"The perspective that may arouse audience's interest is that the movie would not be a simple romantic story. It's like a fairy tale but filled with elements that a thriller film is usually featured. I think every detail may exhibit the vitality of such a realistic story."
For Love or Money is also South Korea's mega-entertainer Rain's first Chinese film, in which he acts Xing Lu's lover, the lead role "Xu Chengxun".
Besides, audiences will also see famous actor Wang Xuebing and actress Tang Yan in side roles.
