Known as the deadliest American sniper ever, Chris Kyle was a United States Navy SEAL with 160 confirmed kills. His memoir was The New York Times bestseller and also the inspiration of Clint Eastwood's latest action film, American Sniper.
Taking the leading role of the movie, Academy-award nominator Bradley Cooper admits that he felt the huge responsibility laid on his shoulders while playing this real life hero.
"The fact that you're basically putting the trust of his family in your hands to tell this man's story, their family members' story, so I'd say a lot of pressure that I put on myself. And so I should because it's a huge honor to be able to play this man. "
The 84-year-old director speaks about finding new ways to tell stories, particularly when it comes to war.
"I have just always tried to find stories that are different. For instance, in 'Letters from Iwo Jima,' I tried to take the other side's point of view of how it was conscripted being sent into the most deadly battle, maybe the most deadly battle in World War II, and the obstacles they had to live with. And this picture is the obstacle they had, the home life as opposed to the combat life. And being a SEAL, there's a certain dedication to the country and defense of the country that you don't find in a lot of other places."
"American Sniper" focuses on Chris Kyle, whose skills as a sniper made him a hero during the war in Iraq. But as stories of his courageous exploits spread, insurgents put a price on his head.
When he returned home, Kyle had to face a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father.
Chris Kyle was killed in 2013 by a fellow serviceman suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
"American Sniper" opens in the United States on December 25, with wide release on January 16.
