The film Lotus Code depicts how three anti-Japanese young crusaders fought hard and used wisdom to resist the Japanese invasion.
Throughout this thorny process, a mysterious force called "Lotus" obstructed the three crusaders, but the trio conquered all obstacles and finally decoded the most confidential information, a key-step in their successful struggle against the Japanese invaders.
Lotus Code is director Zhu Qingyang's first feature film. Qing Yang explains why he chose to shoot a spy film for his maiden filmmaking attempt.
"A spy genre film that will bring some intelligent and memorable stories to the silver screen, however, is not easy to shoot. For both director and his cast, it's a great challenge. I think I need such an opportunity to practice and improve."
Qingyang was born in 1991 to the famous Chinese comedian Zhu Shimao. At the age of 8, he was sent by his father to live in the United Sates. After graduating from New York University, Qingyang decided to come back to China and pursue the art of film-making.
In fact, Qingyang is not the only star kid in Lotus Code. He also invited his childhood playmates to join the film's cast.
In the film, Gao Liwen, daughter of celebrated Chinese actress Wang Ji, plays the role of a secret Kuomintang agent who helps the trio decode confidential information.
Chen Yuemo, the son of veteran Chinese actor Chen Baoguo and Hou Di, the son of another famous Chinese actor Hou Tianlai, also appear in the film alongside their childhood friend Qingyang.
"Upon my return to China, I know nobody famous who could take part in my film. At this crucial moment, I was thinking of my close friends who began to know and play with each other since childhood. As soon as I mentioned this film to them, they all agreed to join the project."
The spy film features seven celebrity children who are following their parent's footsteps to stardom. There is also Pan Yang, daughter of skit actor Pan Changjiang, Li Dahai, son of veteran actor Li Chengru and Ying Batu, son of popular sitcom actress Song Dandan.
Zhu Shimao acts as the supervising producer for the film. His comedic partner and master skit player, Chen Peisi, also plays the part of a chief monk in a temple.
Time has yet to tell whether these young stars will ever surpass the fame of their celebrity parents. Lotus Code hits theaters on January 16th, check it out for yourself at a local cinema.
