Kung Fu Jungle is a constant exhibition of martial arts fight scenes with some story thrown in the middle. For audiences who are looking for a non-stop ride of action packed sequences this film will not disappoint them.
Donnie Yen himself does the action choreography for the film himself and it is breath taking. The action scenes are like a really potent cocktail with a strong blend of over the top choreography, hard hits and intensity.
The problem is that after watching a lot of films starring Donnie Yen I have grown to a point now where I expect some substance to go a long with the action and at times Kung Fu Jungle is lacking in this area.
The film sometimes feels like it has trouble in finding it's own identity, it can't decide if it is a crime thriller or a martial arts action film. The criminology used in the film is quite clever.
Watching the police decipher the motivation of the killer and martial arts style used based on the injuries of his victims was entertaining but it left me wanting more. I would have loved to see further forensic tests that could have told the police more about the victims and the killer. This would have also made the police force seem more competent and it would have made me like them more.
The biggest thrill of this action packed film for me, came from Wang Bao Qiang's performance. I have grown quite accustomed to seeing Wang Bao Qiang in a comedic setting such as a world without thieves. I have to admit I had my suspicions about how well he would be able to portray a psychotic killer. I was however presently surprised, he was not only believably psychotic, but his on screen presence genuinely gave me the chills.
A weak plot sadly tarnished his strong performance. Wang Bao Qiang plays a martial arts practitioner who's wife tragically contracts cancer. This is followed by Wang Bao Qiang going on a crazed frenzy killing all the top martial artists in Hong Kong to prove he his the best.
The problem is the relationship between these two entities in the story is not explained very clearly. I personally failed to understand if Wang Bao Qiang's wife developing cancer was the reason for his actions, and if so why? What is the connection there? Or if they were just two non-related events, and if this is the case then why add in this side story. It made the plot seem needlessly convoluted and it made the entire movie all seem a bit far-fetched.
I can't go as far as to say that Kung Fu Jungle is great, but it is a very FUN movie. It was an adrenaline rush filled with non-stop action. So if you are looking for a fun Friday night film and not overly bothered by depth then It is still good entertainment after a long week of work.
My personal score for this film: 6.0
