After entertaining audiences as a boot-wearing cat, a spy and a mariachi, now Antonio Banderas is setting sail as a bearded pirate in the second installment of the SpongeBob movies: Sponge Out of Water.
"I take very seriously, the kids world because I've been a parent too. When you do a kids movie, you have more possibilities to expand your acting in different ways. You feel more free to do things, especially in a movie like that with a pirate, who's always been a romantic character and a free spirit."
The SpongeBob SquarePants is a multi-award winning animated tv series. It records the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city. In 2004, the first film adaptation hit the theatre and received positive reception.
Banderas plays Burger Beard, an evil private that obtains a magical book to make whatever is written in it come true. The actor has a say in the universal appeal of his character.
"It's on a whole different level this time. The technology is...I suppose that is because he's a pathological, optimistic character that people need in these particularly violent times in which we are living, some kind of hope, even if he if it's a sponge, the one that's talking to you,"
The film stars the regular television cast while features live action scenes.
Tom Kenny, the voice actor for the animated sponge, has been impressed by the look of the upcoming film.
"It's a big Paramount feature, so you could it in a way that was just much more grand. But what I liked about the movie - what I was relieved when I saw the movie last weekend is that the characters in that traditional two-dimensional hand drawn representation of SpongeBob is still really the heart, the visual heart, of the movie,"
You can see the film Friday in U.S. theaters and other countries around the world since early February.
